Stella Ruth Drum

Drum of Winchester/Medford  August 21, Stella Ruth. Beloved wife of the late Edward F Drum. Loving mother of Kevin and his wife Susan of Winchester. Devoted sister of the late John Ogonik and the late Frances Bezubka. Loving aunt of Richard Bezunka, Robert Bezubka, Kate Lemieux, and Glenn Drum. Cherished grandmother of Steven J Drum of Medford. Stella Drum was born at home in the North End of Boston on December 21, 1914 but soon moved to the West End.  She and her friends loved playing stickball on Billerica Street and off the wall on the back of a pharmacy on Causeway Street with the local patrolman.   She loved going with her father, family and friends to the Charles River for Sunday outings. Later she moved to Worcester Street in the South End where she sang in the Holy Trinity Church Choir  She brought Kevin there as a child and told him how she had a solo for a special occasion and the Cardinal came over to her and told her she had a beautiful voice.  Boy did she love to sing. Holy Trinity, Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Raphael’s, St. Theresa's, St. Barbara's and St Eulalia choirs and  three international competitions with the Sweet  Adeline's.  She enjoyed the Shukulele group who sang at her 99, 100, 101 and 102 birthdays and the amazing show that her nephew Robert and the Hot Spot Cabernet did for her 100 birthday party.  She enjoyed the sing a longs with Bob, the entertainment and staff at the Winchester Nursing Center.She received a BA in teaching from Boston Teachers college and taught first grade for over 30 years in both Boston and later at the Gleason School in West Medford. She received a lot of satisfaction in teaching first grade and was very proud that her grandson Steve who she inspired to work with young children. She had two vices in life (not counting an occasional trip to a casino) the Boston Red Sox, and cars.   She was a very proud, kind, loving person.  Yet a strong women and a true fighter for what she believed was right and for her family. Visiting hours will be held in the Gaffey Funeral Home, 43 High Street, Medford on Sunday, August 27 from 6-8pm. Stella's family will meet relatives and friends at St. Raphael's Church Medford on Monday August 28, at 9:30 am for a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial. Interment Winchester cemetery Winchester.
